Booker T. Washington called it the Negro Wall Street, a Black district of four well-equipped drug stores, hotels, the Dreamland Theater, Loula and John Williams's confectionary, J.B. Stradford's hotel, the Nails shoe shop, dozens of churches, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and homes with pianos. The wealth was real, accumulated despite segregation, and visible from the street.
