The deeds that burned
Why Greenwood's destruction was as much about land as it was about people.

Land is the long memory of wealth
Generational Black wealth in America has been blocked at the land level over and over: post-Civil War 'reconstruction' promises broken, redlining maps drawn in 1934 still affecting appraisals today, urban renewal demolitions of the 60s, the 2008 foreclosure crisis disproportionately stripping Black homeowners.
The current gap
As of 2024, the Black homeownership rate is roughly 44% versus a white rate of roughly 73%. That gap is wider today than it was in 1960.
Why ownership matters mechanically
- A 30-year fixed mortgage locks your largest monthly cost while rent compounds.
- Home equity is the single largest source of net worth for the median American family.
- Property tax basis can transfer to heirs in many states, preserving generational wealth.
- Homeowners can borrow against equity at far lower rates than personal loans.
